Cynthia Flynn

Interim Director of the Center for Child and Family Studies

As Interim Director, Cynthia guides the strategic planning for the Center. Part of that is keeping the Center’s work aligned with the University’s mission: To serve our state’s citizens through research, teaching and community engagement. The Center remains one of UofSC’s most active participants in the South Carolina social services community. It does so by building capacity in those who serve our state’s most vulnerable populations.

Cynthia also makes certain that our self-funded institution is offering the best product possible to our clients. Excellent, individualized products maintain relationships and earn new business with clients who share our values and goals. Cynthia guides the Center to offer excellent and economical value to partners through effective and efficient work. Maintaining a passionate, compassionate staff is one of Cynthia’s goals. She supports her teams in hiring talented and experienced people to develop and deliver the products we create with our clients.

A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Cynthia earned a Ph.D. in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She has forty years of experience working in human service and education programs. She has conducted research studies in the child welfare field including adoption, education of foster youth, and foster youth placement and has conducted numerous program evaluations in a variety of contexts.

Cynthia guides the Center in its daily mission to build capacity in those who serve children and families and to strive for our vision of being the best center for child- and family-oriented professional development and capacity building in the nation.
